Lipstick Rodeo Magazine

"by women, for everyone"

Portals: a note from anee

This month we introduce new contributor Jillian Engstrom-Cardillo who delves into the most sacred portal of all, and the need and courage to reclaim it, and as she writes… it is done. Some readers claim, “it is an article of a lifetime.” Then we are honored to have the unforgettable images of the Slave House on Goree Island by renown photographer Lenny Foster, as he speaks the unspeakable. Heather Wasklewicz of Peaks Island, Maine, shares images that are deceptively delicate; like a piano sonata where the notes are as important as the spaces in between. And finally, me, on how one adventure ending pivots into the greatest adventure of all.

In the 1880"s, in cahoots with the railway, Buffalo Bill's Wild West shows romanticized new freedom in the West.

Cowgirls became part of the playbill with  their abilities to rope, shoot, and barrel jump. Often, their skills outshined their male counterparts.

Like other marginalized populations of that time, they had their own rodeos and the street name for these all girl competitions  was "Lipstick Rodeo"

We make no bones about it, Lipstick Rodeo is a magazine by women about  their "awesomeness." But we don't want to be too old fashioned about what this means. It is 2024 and men are awesome too. So check out our Dude's column and see what these great guys are up to.

Evolve 2024

It is 2024, and like a wet blue tick hound shaking off the marsh water from an early morning swim, we cast off the grief and limitations of the past few years, and ask ourselves, "Ok, what did we learn? How can we evolve?"
